"Green Buildings Get a
Boost", (c) Construction Week, 2/27/06
Green buildings got a boost from
a memorandum of understanding issued by the federal government for the design,
construction and operation of high performance and sustainable buildings. The
MOU says the government will remain neutral regarding which green building
rating system is used to meet government standards for sustainability. This
demonstrates the government's understanding that a mandated preference for a
particular rating system would stifle exactly the kind of competition necessary
to actively allow the best options to come to market, says Ward Hubbell,
executive director of the Green Building Initiative. There are several rating
systems, including the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED system and the
Sustainable Buildings Industry Council’s Green Building Guidelines.
